Some Useful Hints and Advices to Students for Singing High Notes - Part 1

Physical body aspect

  • One’s vocal tone is actually affected by the way one stands. It is preferable that one looks straight ahead instead of upwards or downwards. Particularly during the process of singing high notes, never lift your head upwards. During practices, it is most preferable to stand. On the occasion when one has learnt the exercises by heart, practice them away from the piano. Just the occasional confirmation of notes and chords to give you the correct pitch. Never "lean" on the piano, physically or figuratively. If you are the one playing the piano, try to sit upright with a straight back if possible, chest forward, and avoid slouching. It is a lazy attitude that rotten for the voice, because it will force the throat to do all the work that was initially supposed to be done by the body, in supporting the tone.
  • One's jaw, tongue and throat should be in a condition whereby it is relaxed and free. Numerous students commit the mistake of stiffening the muscles under the chin (in other words the floor of the mouth), or the jaw when they sing high notes. To this problem, they are usually unaware of its presence unless their attention is drawn to it. A habit will be very difficult to abandon once it is formed. Let the lower jaw remain free and allow the tone to form itself at the roof of the mouth. Try to picture yourself singing with only the use of the upper jaw (to this point I have offered a FREE multimedia eBook to help you to master this, please optin at the left to access the eBook) , not the lower jaw. This will help to avoid the biggest obstacle in the path to progress - rigidity.
  • The relaxation of your body is needed while sing high notes. Relaxation does not imply the floppiness, but instead the absence of unneeded and non-beneficial tension. You can apply a lot of energy into your piece without using excessive effort or force - a very different experience.

Mindful aspect

  • One's mind as well as the body has to be active and alert. You not only need to use your throat when you learn to sing high notes, but use your brains as well.
  • One must put all attention to whatever one is doing and concentrate while singing high notes. Practicing with the lack of purpose will not get one anywhere. One must bear in mind while practicing the exercises that each and every one of the exercises has a particular objective to it.
  • It is especially important - One has to THINK before attempting to hit high notes. Before really attempting the singing of the high note, one must have a mental idea of the type of high notes one wants to produce. A faulty tone is caused by a hurried or badly prepared start. The breath should be taken in well in advance before opening the mouth to sing, unlike many singers who have a bad habit of 'grasping' the air at the very last moment. Your breathing pattern should be rhythmical and steady and fully under your control before you attack the high note tone.
  • The way to be sure beforehand about the type of quality of high note tone you are going to produce is the habit of MENTAL ANTICIPATION. Initially, in order to get the expected outcome, you will have to make many trails. However, an experienced vocalist or singer does not need to hold on until he has actually sung the note to tell how it sounds. This is the final goal of which you must aim.
