The Common Problem Areas in Singing High Notes

Vocal singing is gaining people’s interest slowly and steadily. Singers approach professional voice coaches for voice lessons to learn vocal singing.  In my experience with many singers I found some common problems among them. Most of these problems arise while singing high notes.

First and foremost is the breathing problem. Many singers have the tendency to lift up their breathing just before singing high notes. This is done purposely and is a bad habit which is difficult to break once formed. This high breath will cause rigidity, shortness of breath, uneven and uneasy breathing, all of which will critically affect the singing of high notes.

This problem arises because while singing high notes, singers are just contracting their abdomen. When you do this, your voice sounds pinched and you have no control over your vocal chords which will lead to disaster. Many singers have practiced this wrong method for years, a habit that has affected their voice.

Theoretically, when you are singing, the inhaling muscles and the exhaling muscles lead to the contraction of the abdomen. But this action is not similar to the action when you are just contracting the abdomen. When the inhaling and exhaling muscle groups counteract, they make the diaphragm sink giving an extended time for the bottom of the lung to be filled by the breathing air. This longer period of time helps to control your exhalation of air. The counter-reaction phenomenon does not happen when you are just contracting your abdomen and makes you  lose control of you exhalation. This will directly affect your breathing, resulting with tension in your upper chest and shortness of breath. It will also strain your throat, jaw and other vocal organs. To avoid this and bring out your voice with ease it is important to learn the correct method of breathing.

The second problem to be addressed is that while singing high notes singers by mistake force their held breath into their lower abdomen. This makes their stomach to protrude when they are singing a high note. Apart from giving them an unpleasant physique this erroneous method will not give them the much needed breathing support, making their high notes extremely difficult and devoid of power.

The last area of problem is the falsetto voice. Singers sometimes with their single-minded goal of learning how to sing high notes lose track of their real voice. They start to highlight their falsetto to achieve the highest range of notes. When they concentrate on their high notes their middle and lower notes suffers lack of power and is dull, making their high notes rigid and stressed. This leads to unpleasant ‘breaks’ in their singing voice. When in their mid-notes some singers are affected by the ‘Voce Bianca’ problem.
A voice that is dull without breath support is said to have the ‘Voce Bianca’ problem.

Singing high notes with a falsetto will give you a disjointed and uneven voice. So it is imperative to keep your own voice when you are singing. This will make your voice unique, solid and penetrating. Real voice will make you achieve the high notes magnificently.
