How to Sing High Notes- Overcoming
the Hurdles
Tenor is the highest range of a singing voice when not using falsetto.
The tenor voice group has an appeal and attraction that other vocal
groups lack. Music lovers are enchanted and fascinated by a tenor’s
voice as it has a pleasing, clear and stunning lyrical quality. Tenor
is the favored voice for heroic roles. Tenor voices are dramatic,
breathtaking and the shocking high notes are very hard to produce. No
wonder brilliant tenors are a rare find!
One has to be extremely vigilant while singing a tenor because even a
tiny misstep can bring you down. So every singer’s goal is to find that
correct method of how to sing high notes.
Based on my experience of performing and coaching how to sing high
notes for many years, I have made a note of the common problems
encountered by the singers.
- Most common problem is a dull
voice. Here the voice lacks brilliance and grandeur. The voice is very
heavy and singers feel uneasy with high notes. This is because they
place more importance in their quest for strong and loud voice,
ignoring the importance of voice appreciation.
- Using excessive force to raise
their voice will actually make their voice to cave in. So when singing
high notes their voice lacks in timbre.
- Another problem is when they have
an unbalanced, wobbling and wavering larynx. This vacillating voice may
cause severe problems in achieving the much needed precision in tone.
- An impure voice and uncontrolled
breath will lead to injury of the vocal cords in time.
- Restricted voice movement. This
happens when you deliberately pursue a forward voice. This makes the
sound waves to run through the nose causing critical nasal sound
problem.
- Shallow breath resulting in a limp
voice. Taking a shallow breath will make your voice lose power that is
needed to reach a high note.
The above mentioned problems are commonly encountered by students while
singing high notes.
It is imperative to determine the correct method of learning vocal
singing and how to sing high notes. You should set the goal and
understand precisely what kind of voice production will be best for you
and should pursue this with a clear mind and determination.
I have given a few pointers on how you can enhance your singing of high
notes.
- Humming. Set up a bottom-up cavity
channel and start practicing humming exercises. This will help you
achieve resonance.
- Focus on mid and low registers. If
you can achieve good mid and low registers it will automatically lead
you to a successful high-note singing. Your voice should be natural,
effortless and free and you should always maintain a smiling
countenance.
- It will enhance your voice if you
can establish an efficient and appropriate voice register conversion
system.
- Maintain a low-position larynx.
This can guarantee you a perfect high note. Keeping the larynx in a low
position can be achieved by following the correct method and constant
practice. Your jaw plays an important role in singing high notes.
Always try to keep your jaw back and downwards to hit the perfect high
note.
