Importance of the Head Resonance in Singing High Notes

Head resonance signifies youth. A voice devoid of vibrancy is an old voice. The charm of youth and its sparkle is given by the overtones that sound with each tone. Head resonance helps to enhance and regulate your tone. It makes your voice flexible and penetrating, making its discovery vital for achieving the perfect singing voice, particularly while singing high notes.

Formation of head resonance

Resonances in the head cavities form the head resonance. We use head resonance not only while singing but also while speaking normally in our day to day life. Even if we use head resonance daily, we do it unconsciously and so are not aware of using it. The chief difference between speaking and singing is based on how we put to use the resonant cavities in our body. Awareness of this head resonance is a must while you are learning how to sing high notes.

As stated earlier head resonance occurs in the head cavity. The head resonance includes the resonances in the nasal cavity and the resonances in the frontal sinus and sphenoid sinus cavities. Head resonance is produced higher than the other resonances for the obvious reason that the head cavity is positioned higher than any other part of our human body. In comparison to the chest cavity, oropharyngeal and the mouth, the head cavity along with the frontal sinus and sphenoid sinus cavities is quite small in space and volume. Head resonance travels farther and unreservedly, and is easier to generate according to the formation of sound and propagating principles.

Ways to discover the head resonance

Humming exercises can lead you to the discovery of head resonance. You can produce a humming sound through vocal cord, which is resonated in the nasal cavity but it is not a nasal sound. This humming sound is similar to the sound you produce while groaning. While producing a humming sound, the use of breath should be soft, keeping your mouth, head and pharynx in a relaxed position. It is also very important to keep the oropharyngeal cavity relaxed and not to strain your nasal cavity.

When you produce the humming sound satisfying all the above said conditions, you can feel your voice being focused between the eyebrows. You can barely feel the vibrations in the pharynx cavities and the mouth. The final outcome of the head resonance will be brilliant, sharp and extremely focused and what you are experiencing is the head resonance in your voice.

Utilizing this head resonance which will help you to reach high tones easily is a difficult art, but without it a singer cannot be confident of the durability of his voice.
