Singing High Notes with a Personality

Mostly singers are relaxed and feel safe and secure when the pitch of a song is not too high. But they become extremely fatigued and feel drained out when the pitch gets higher. They also feel as if their throat is locked, making them anxious, uneasy and stressed out. This is a common problem faced by beginners while singing high notes. If these problems are ignored instead of being resolved, the singers become skeptical about their capabilities in learning how to sing high notes.

The most challenging problem faced by singers in the process of learning vocal music is singing high notes with ease and clarity. Meticulous practice of singing high notes following the correct method can resolve this problem. This cannot be achieved in a short period but with patience and practice over a period of time it can done perfectly. It is possible for anyone to produce high notes in the absence of any hereditary or other physical problems in the vocal cord.

Unnecessary application of force on your throat, while singing high notes is the reason for the fatigue and stress that you feel. On the contrary you should avoid applying any force to the throat while singing high notes. You should keep your throat absolutely free of pressure. Professional advice from vocal coaches to their students is to achieve a perfect low and mid range and then use the same technique and feeling while singing the high notes. If the students are not able to produce high notes with the same ease and confidence of producing their low and mid range naturally, it means that they still have some problem with their mid range. Otherwise they might have solved the problem of singing high notes.

Every individual has a unique personality. Singing naturally does not imply that the singer is in a normal condition. A singer with a balanced personality trait is a rare find. People usually tend to lean on either side of the scale. It will be very difficult to sing high notes for a person who tends to be lazy and has a reserved or shy personality. On the other hand for an extrovert who is impulsive and impetuous it may be easy to get the high notes but they are likely to get tensed and their singing might turn to shouting. These are just examples and are not conclusive.

The best method for singing high notes is to master the mid notes. You have to achieve a state where you can keep your mind calm and clear while singing the mid tones. Now, if you can apply and maintain the same feeling while singing high notes, you are on the right track in perfecting it. You can also achieve this by avoiding the application of unnecessary and deliberate force on the throat. Your throat should not be restricted in any way while singing high notes. Throat muscles get tensed if you apply force on it. If you tend to apply more force as the pitch gets higher you will feel as if your throat is locked.

Having stated all the problems that occur while singing high notes, now let’s see how they can be solved. Some of the questions that may arise include how to keep the throat stress-free naturally? Or, how to avoid applying excessive force on the throat while singing high notes? If you are under the delusion that you have to apply force on your throat while singing high notes then let me set you straight. It is absolutely unnecessary and the only thing you are achieving by doing so is damaging your throat and spoiling your voice. So the next time you are singing high notes, avoid applying force to the throat. This will definitely solve the problem.

If the problem is not due to the application of force to the throat then the problem must be due to your lack of breath support, or whatever support you have is not firm and strong enough. If this is the case, then this support that comes from the abdomen will be moved to your upper body, in particular to the throat. The only way to avoid this is to find the correct method and keep practicing at it till you get it right.
